Life in Piemonte
The landscape, rhythms, and environment that support the work
There is something about this part of Piemonte that naturally invites a slower pace.
Amiglia is situated in the hills of southern Piemonte, close to the border with Liguria, in a landscape of forests, hazelnut groves, winding country roads, and open skies. Life moves differently here. The days are shaped by changing light, the seasons, the weather, and the rhythms of nature rather than by schedules, traffic, and constant stimulation.
Many people arrive carrying the momentum of busy lives. At first, the quietness can feel unfamiliar. Yet after a few days, something often begins to shift. Attention settles. The nervous system relaxes. It becomes easier to notice the simple things: birdsong in the morning, sunlight moving across the hills, the changing colours of the landscape, and the silence that exists between one activity and the next.
A Place to Slow Down
The work we do at Amiglia is rooted in presence, self-inquiry, and deep listening. The environment itself supports this process.
From Amiglia, it is possible to walk for hours through the surrounding woods without meeting another person. The paths wind through forests and hills, inviting a slower way of moving and observing. Along the way, you may encounter deer crossing a field, catch a glimpse of a fox disappearing into the trees, or simply find yourself accompanied by the sounds of countless birds.
Many participants discover that these walks become an extension of the retreat itself. Without trying to achieve anything, they offer space to reflect, digest experiences, and reconnect with a more natural rhythm.
Living with Nature
Nature is not something separate from retreat life at Amiglia; it is woven into it.
The birds accompany us throughout the day, including during the morning practice. As we gather in silence in the half-open meditation hall, their songs become part of the experience, together with the changing weather, the morning light, and the sounds of the surrounding landscape.
The seasons are clearly felt here. Spring brings fresh growth and blossoms. Summer fills the hills with warmth and long evenings. Autumn transforms the forests and marks the harvest of the hazelnuts that are characteristic of this region. Winter offers a quieter atmosphere, inviting stillness and reflection.
Rather than creating a retreat experience separate from nature, we allow the natural world to participate in the process.
A Village Rhythm
A small river flows between Amiglia and the village of Spigno Monferrato. Crossing the old medieval bridge, you enter a place that has remained remarkably authentic.
Spigno is not a polished tourist destination. It is a living village where daily life continues much as it has for generations. Most residents are older people who have spent much of their lives here. There is a simplicity and groundedness to the place that many visitors find refreshing.
The ringing of church bells marks the passing of the hours. Conversations take place in the village square. The rhythm of life is slower, quieter, and closely connected to the land.
For many people arriving from cities and busy professional lives, this atmosphere itself becomes part of the retreat.
Connected Yet Remote
Although Amiglia feels secluded, it is surprisingly accessible.
Located close to the border between Piemonte and Liguria, it offers the rare combination of deep immersion in nature and easy access to the wider world. The Mediterranean coast near Savona can be reached in about an hour by car or train, while a railway station is within walking distance of Amiglia.
Many visitors appreciate this balance. Within a short time, they can travel from an international airport or a bustling city into a landscape where silence, spaciousness, and nature once again become the dominant presence.
The Land as a Teacher
At Amiglia, the landscape is not merely a backdrop. It is part of the experience.
Some insights emerge during meditation sessions, movement practices, or moments of inquiry. Others arrive unexpectedly while sitting beneath a tree, tending the garden, watching the evening light settle over the hills, or listening to the sounds of the forest.
Nature has a way of inviting us out of our habitual thinking and back into direct experience. It reminds us that life unfolds according to its own rhythms, and that there is wisdom in slowing down enough to notice.
A Supportive Environment for Retreat and Self-Inquiry
The practices we explore at Amiglia—meditation, self-inquiry, movement, dream work, creativity, and conscious living—are deeply supported by the surrounding environment.
The spaciousness of the landscape, the quietness of the woods, the presence of the seasons, and the simplicity of village life create conditions that make it easier to listen, observe, and reconnect with what is essential.
For this reason, Piemonte is not simply where Amiglia happens to be located. The land itself is part of the retreat experience and an important companion in the work we do.
